Ronnie is a 17 year old girl, who lives with her mom in New York. Her dad left their family when she was young. They always played the piano together; he taught her everything she knows, but after he leaves she swears to never play the piano again. Now she has put a purple streak in her long, brown hair; and she wears all black. She does everything and anything to make her mom angry: staying out way past curfew, dating guys with tattoos and piercings, and doing bad in school.
She wants to stay home for the summer with her friends, but her mom is making her go to her dads. She doesn't want to be anywhere near her dad or the piano. She thinks he's going to try making her play it with him again. She tells herself that she is going to avoid her dad at all costs, and stay out as late as possible. She wants to find the worst people to hang out with just to make her dad mad.
Her dad never gets mad at her like she wants, he actually puts up a wall all around the piano because Ronnie doesn't want to see it anymore. He never gets upset with her for staying out late, and when Ronnie yells at him, he doesn't say anything.
She ends up forgiving her father. She realizes that she doesn't want to hate her dad anymore, she starts to be friends with him, hang out with better people, and not stay out so late. Once she finds out her dad was diagnosed with cancer and is rapidly dying, she finishes a song he started to compose. For the first time in years she plays the piano for him before he passes.
